Welcome to Day 3 – Wild vs. Domestic horses

Hi everyone,

Great work on the discussion on the differences between wild and domesticated horses from Day 1! Some very good points were brought forward and this gives us a great starting point in our discussions on managing colic risk as we move through the rest of the course material. Once we understand how the gut was meant to function and the factors that can influence the function, we are several steps ahead at reducing the risk.  So, it it is likely becoming clear that the gut is well-designed for its intended purpose and it is the management that can then increase the risk.  Well done!

Now let’s take a look at some of the major risks of colic, starting with Housing and Turn-out.

Please find attached summary table of some of the key differences between wild and domesticated horses and how this may impact the management of the domestic horse.
