Week 1 – Day 1

Hello everyone,

Your classmates in this online course come from a range of horse backgrounds and experiences. Through this Horse Portal, we will be able to share our common experiences and discuss differences.

Today we begin with Unit 1 – Introduction and Horse Behaviour: Wild vs. Stabled. Please take some time to read the resources provided and discuss with the class: a behaviour that may be caused by how we manage stabled horses (a behaviour that is not likely to be seen in a wild horse).  How does our management affect the horse and what changes could be made to improve horse welfare?  If you have any questions, be sure to post them in the “Questions to the Instructor” forum.

Some of the readings that are provided in the course link to www.thehorse.com. To view these articles, you will need to register with the website. It is a free registration and there are useful resources available.
